About Black Boys in Tech
Black Boys in Tech is a workforce development organization that specializes in preparing and placing diverse STEM talent. Our pipeline begins at birth with building early STEM literacy skills and ends after members are placed at their first professional position after high school. In addition to our four school/community programs, we offer a menu of age-appropriate courses and Tech Camps as part of our outreach efforts. This particular course is offered exclusively to our general membership.
Job Summary
We are seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and tech-savvy Course Instructor to join our team and teach an engaging Introduction to Robotics course for kids. As a Course Instructor, you will be responsible for guiding young learners in understanding the fundamentals of programming while using the BBC micro:bit platform with Microsoft MakeCode. This position offers a fantastic opportunity to inspire the next generation of young programmers and introduce them to the exciting world of coding.
Qualifications
Educational Background: Currently pursuing (or already have obtained) a degree or relevant certification in robotics, engineering technology, STEM education, or a related field is preferred.
Micro:Bit and MakeCode Experience: Experience with BBC micro:bit and Microsoft MakeCode is highly preferred.
Programming Experience: Strong understanding and experience in programming languages, especially block-based programming languages like Scratch or Microsoft MakeCode.
Teaching or Tutoring Experience: Prior experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring kids is highly desirable. Patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to explain complex concepts in an accessible manner are essential.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively to both students and adults.
Child Safety: Be able to pass a local and federal background check.
Responsibilities
Prework: Familiarize yourself with Black Boys in Tech’s Intro to Robotic: Foundation of Coding course.
Lesson Planning: Using the course curriculum as a template, plan engaging lessons that allow students to effectively learn the course material.
Class Facilitation: Lead interactive and dynamic classes to engage kids in the learning process. Utilize various teaching methods, such as hands-on projects, group activities, and discussions, to enhance understanding and retention.
Monitoring & Evaluation: Monitor student involvement and progress by tracking attendance, providing grades and constructive feedback, and conducting pre- and post-assessments. Administer program evaluations at the end of the course.
Child Safety Awareness: Commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all participants, adhering to child safety protocols and procedures.
Meetings: Attend meetings held by BBIT program managers.
Other Tasks: Implement other tasks as assigned by the BBIT program manager.
Course Information:
This course is designed to introduce kids to the fundamentals of coding using the user-friendly Microsoft MakeCode platform. The BBC micro:bit is a versatile and programmable microcontroller, and with MakeCode's visual programming language, kids will have a blast creating interactive projects and bringing their ideas to life!
